The Edberg Foundation was established in 1990 in the name and spirit of Rolf Edberg. Edberg, as an author, philosopher and environmental debater, gave a voice to those people who are struck the hardest by the environmental situation in the world. His words have the ability to inspire works on both the local and the global level, by individuals as well as groups.
Rolf Edberg had an interdisciplinary viewpoint, where establishing democratic rights went side by side with active environmental projects, in the effort to minimize the environmental problems of the Earth. Deploration of resources leads to deterioration of both nature and the conditions of human beings. The industrialized world contributes to a disproportionately large fraction of the exploitation, while the developing nations suffer the greater share of environmental deterioration.
The foundation’s mission is to, like Rolf Edberg, encourage environmental achievements and efforts. Therefore, the two main objectives of the foundation are:
- to award an annual Edberg Stipend to an individual who has taken the initiative to or actively participated in an important environmental project in a country with substantial environmental problems. The stipend provides funding for studies and research.
- to arrange environmental seminars to educate and stimulate debate on environmental dilemmas. Several of the seminar themes have corresponded to books by Rolf Edberg.
The Edberg Foundation relies on contributions and grants from companies, societies, organizations and individuals. The Edberg Stipend is the result of dividends from investments in funds.
